Which Munnar sunrise point should you choose?
01Top Station Sunrise
Top Station is one of the classic high-altitude viewpoints around Munnar. Kerala Tourism identifies Top Station at around 1,700 metres above sea level and describes it as a major viewpoint on the Munnar–Kodaikanal road. It is also associated with views towards the Western Ghats and Tamil Nadu.
The road to Top Station is winding and mountainous, so an early departure is important.
02Chokramudi Sunrise
Chokramudi is a mountain trekking destination near Munnar. Kerala Tourism currently lists Chokramudi at about 18 km from Munnar, around 2,195 metres altitude, with a moderate trek of approximately 3–4 hours through tea plantations, shola forests and montane grasslands. Early mornings are particularly suitable for views.
This is not simply a drive-and-step-out sunrise point. Be prepared for uphill walking, uneven terrain, early-morning darkness, cooler temperatures, a multi-hour trek and weather-dependent access.
A current local trekking listing describes sunrise departures around 4:30 AM, although the exact meeting time depends on the operator and date.
03Kolukkumalai Sunrise
Kolukkumalai is one of the most distinctive sunrise experiences near Munnar. Kerala Tourism's Responsible Tourism programme describes it as a high-altitude tea plantation at approximately 7,900 feet, accessible by jeep or trekking, and specifically highlights its sunrise experience.
A normal taxi cannot complete the final Kolukkumalai route. The usual journey is Munnar → Suryanelli → 4WD Jeep → Kolukkumalai → Sunrise → Return. The final section is rugged off-road terrain, and current local operators commonly start the sunrise jeep around 4:00–4:30 AM from Suryanelli.
When booking, ask for: Munnar taxi + Kolukkumalai sunrise jeep safari — rather than treating the entire journey as a normal car trip.
04Chathurangapara Sunrise
Chathurangapara is a high-wind viewpoint in Idukki with broad Western Ghats views. Kerala Tourism specifically recommends the viewpoint around sunrise or sunset, when the changing light creates the most dramatic views. It also warns visitors to maintain a safe distance from the cliff because wind speed can increase suddenly.
05Bodimettu Sunrise
Bodimettu is a mountain route towards the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border and can be considered for travellers who want an early-morning hill journey away from the busiest Munnar viewpoints.
Because sunrise visibility depends heavily on cloud, mist and weather, the experience should be planned as a scenic sunrise attempt rather than a guaranteed sunrise view. Exact pickup time will be planned according to the travel date and expected sunrise.
What time should we leave for a sunrise?
There is no single fixed Munnar sunrise time throughout the year. Current 2026 astronomical data shows sunrise in Munnar changing by roughly 45 minutes across the year.
The correct pickup time depends on
- 01Travel date
- 02Sunrise destination
- 03Distance from your hotel
- 04Road conditions
- 05Whether trekking is required
- 06Whether a jeep transfer is required
- 07Desired arrival before first light
For example, a Kolukkumalai trip needs a much earlier start because the journey includes the Suryanelli transfer and off-road climb. We will confirm the practical pickup time based on your travel date.
Sunrise taxi from your Munnar hotel
Early-morning hotel pickup can be arranged from your hotel, resort, homestay, Munnar town or another agreed pickup location. Tell us the exact stay location while booking.
For remote resorts, the required pickup time may be earlier than a Munnar-town pickup.
What happens after sunrise?
You do not necessarily have to return directly to your hotel. Depending on your selected destination and time available, you can add:
Breakfast stop
Tea plantation viewpoint
Tea factory visit
For Kolukkumalai, the tea factory visit can be considered after the sunrise experience, subject to current access and operating conditions.
Waterfall stop
Munnar sightseeing
Hotel return or another destination
Sunrise + breakfast
An early sunrise trip works well with a breakfast stop after returning from the viewpoint. You can request a breakfast stop around Munnar town, Chinnakanal, Suryanelli or a suitable roadside restaurant. Food cost is separate.
Do not rely on every early-morning restaurant being open, especially for very early departures. If breakfast is important, tell us in advance so the route can be planned accordingly.
Photography tips, weather & visibility.
Early-morning hill conditions can change quickly. Sunrise visibility depends on weather — no sunrise point can guarantee a clear sunrise on every day.
- Carry a light jacket
- Keep your phone/camera charged
- Carry a small torch for trekking
- Wear proper walking shoes for trekking routes
- Carry water
- Protect camera equipment from mist
- Avoid standing close to cliff edges
- Follow local guide/operator instructions
Weather & sunrise visibility
Munnar's hills can be covered by mist or cloud, particularly during wet weather. A sunrise trip can still be beautiful when clouds and mist are present, but the actual sun may not be visible.
Therefore, we do not promise a clear sky, visible sun, sea of clouds, specific colours or uninterrupted mountain views. The goal is to take you to the selected sunrise destination at the appropriate time and according to current access conditions.
Read before you book.
Kolukkumalai requires a jeep
If your destination is Kolukkumalai, do not book it as a normal car-only sunrise trip.
The practical route is: Munnar → Suryanelli by taxi → Kolukkumalai by local 4WD jeep → Sunrise → Return. The rough final section is unsuitable for ordinary cars, which is why the local jeep is part of the experience.
Chokramudi is a trek
Chokramudi is not simply a viewpoint beside the road. The Kerala Tourism destination information classifies it as a moderate guided trek lasting approximately 3–4 hours.
Wear suitable footwear and be prepared for an uphill trek. Weather conditions can affect access.
Chathurangapara has strong winds
Chathurangapara can experience high-speed winds. Kerala Tourism specifically advises visitors to stay away from cliff edges because wind intensity can change quickly.
Follow the driver's/local guide's safety instructions during the visit.
Sunrise taxi for couples, families & groups.
Couples
For couples, choose the destination based on the type of experience you want.

Tell us whether you prefer an easy viewpoint, trekking or off-road adventure.
Families
For families, Top Station can be considered when you prefer a road-accessible viewpoint.
If travelling with young children or elderly passengers, trekking and rough off-road routes may require additional consideration. Choose the experience according to the group's comfort and mobility.
Groups
For larger groups, choose a vehicle based on the number of travellers, luggage, hotel pickup location and sunrise destination.
Traveller and Urbania options are available for larger groups, subject to passenger and luggage requirements. For Kolukkumalai, the final safari uses a local off-road jeep with its own passenger limit.
